Speaker: Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez Commissioner of the New York City Department for the Aging
New York City Mayor Eric Adams appointed Lorraine Cortés -Vázquez as Commissioner to the Department for the Aging in March 2022. As Commissioner, Cortés-Vázquez has worked to create equity and increase diversity around the older adult centers across the city, she also implemented the first of its kind Aging Cabinet for Older New Yorkers to unify city agencies to work together and tackle the problems affecting older adults. She continues to work to advance the NYC Aging mission to eliminate ageism, ensure the dignity and quality of life of older adults and support caregivers as she did with the previous administration under former Mayor Bill de Blasio. Before being appointed to Commissioner, Lorraine served as Senior Advisor to de Blasio in the Mayor’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Brian Fahey received his Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. He also completed his dietetic internship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital before returning as a Clinical Dietitian at its Lower Manhattan location. Brian has a special interest in geriatrics, helping older adults achieve their nutritional goals.

Topic: How to navigate the VA system and how to work with older veterans from a trauma-informed perspective
Speaker: Kristin R. Brown, MSW, LCSW
Kristin Brown is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Kristin received her Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology from The University of Pennsylvania in 2000, and received her Masters in Social
Welfare (MSW) from the University of California at Berkeley in 2004.
Kristin started as a Readjustment Counselor at the Ventnor Vet Center in August 2010 and was
promoted to Director of the South Jersey Vet Center in August 2015. Kristin was selected for
details in RCS’s Strategy and Analysis Office in 2022 and in the Office of Policy and Oversight
(OPO) in 2023. Kristin started her position as Program Coordinator/Quality Assurance in OPO in
May 2024.
Kristin’s professional interests include mentorship, leadership coaching, and change
management. Kristin is a VA Program Management Fellow, a leadership coach with the VHA
Leadership Coaching program, and has a Yellow Belt with VHA Lean Six Sigma. Kristin is
expected to receive her Doctorate in Social Work from Rutgers University in May 2026.
